The Government Conscious American: a species close to extinction

By EdG.

You were born in America. From kindergarten through the twelfth grade, you attended state funded schools. At the age of sixteen, you received your official driver's license from whatever state you were born in and drove home on roads so graciously paid for by the U.S. government. You got a job and started saving for college. You also start paying an income tax. "Well gee" you think to yourself, "maybe I'd have my tuition money faster if I didn't have to pay this damn income tax." But then you realize that if you didn't pay, they wouldn't be able to pave the road you drive on to work, or fund the schools that you've been attending all your life.

You finally reach your eighteenth birthday. It's a big day for you, after all, now you can vote. You are now part of the process that elects the leader of the world's greatest nation, despite the fact that you're not even trusted to drink alcohol yet. Decisions, decisions. Republican or democrat? Elephant or Donkey? You've certainly got your work cut out for you. Perhaps Lincoln should decide. The penny lands heads up. Republicans it is. You cast your ballot and until the next election you don't bother yourself with the tedium of politics and the monotony of government.

Then those good old campaign commercials roll around again and suddenly politics is exciting (well, comparatively speaking). There's debates and mudslinging and all kinds of vague, but catchy, slogans about freedom and democracy. It's a grand time for everyone. And of course you needn't worry about the actual policies or issues or the positions of the candidates. After all, there's your man Obama (the penny landed tails this year) with his shiny white teeth and American flag on his lapel, charismatically assuring you that he's got it all figured out. You sure hope so. Fingers crossed, you cast your ballot.

For many, this is the extent of involvement in the affairs of the government. And while most citizens don't decide their party preference through a coin toss, this doesn't change the unfortunate fact that choices are somewhat limited (note that the penny landing perfectly balanced on its side results in a vote for a third party candidate). And even those who maintain the illusion of being politically informed by watching CNN(Clinton News Network) or Bill O'Reilly really don't know that much about how their government works and what the hell is being done with their tax money.

"If you don't read the newspaper, you're uninformed. If you read the newspaper, you're mis-informed."
— Mark Twain

To be fair, most people simply don't have the time or desire to delve into political matters because they have lives, jobs and families. And when they aren't working, taking care of their kids or...well...living then they are seeking out entertainment venues to escape their lives, jobs, and families. Besides, politics really is quite boring.

But even so, shouldn't we be more aware of the doings of an institution which permeates nearly every area of our lives. Our government is so disgustingly bloated and overbearing its a wonder we even have any room to breath. Shouldn't we have some knowledge and oversight on a government which is supposedly operated under, and for the benefit of, the people. Though even considering our ignorance of some matters that we should, and could, obtain knowledge on, there are parts of our government which are virtually impossible to penetrate. The Federal Reserve for example. This is a body, closed off from the public (not to mention congress), of unelected officials who have regulated our economy for decades. And let's not even get started on the CIA.

For too long, our senators, congressmen, judges, and presidents have expanded their power at the expense of the people. But can we blame them? After all, power breeds the hunger for more power. Greed is a natural human reaction to exposure to such control as is wielded by our men and women in office. Can we really expect them to put a leash on themselves after handing over the keys to the kingdom? We, the people, put these politicians in positions of power. We, the people, pay their salaries with our hard earned income. And we, the people, accept whatever laws and regulations they impose on us largely without question.

President Barack Obama has touted time and again that this is an era of change. I think he may be right in this sentiment, or at least I hope so. This is certainly an era of turmoil but the question is, will this turmoil finally open people's eyes? Will they finally begin to question the powers that be and fight the injustices which have been imposed upon them by those powers? At the moment there are too few with this spirit at heart to instate truly meaningful change, i.e. not the type our dear president used in his campaign slogans. But if those few work to instill that spirit in others, there may be hope yet.

I see you need to learn more before you write more misinformation like the idea that money from the income tax is used to fix roads or anything. The income tax pays interest on loans from other countries that the federal government use to pay for all the government programs we can't afford.

Schools are funded by property taxes not income taxes

The reason we work so many hours is precisely to keep us too busy making a living to do much of anything else. That includes women now ,and the children often end up being raised by the state run schools and daycare centers,or by themselves on the streets through "friends who want them to join a gang.

We can send email complaining to our congressmen

We can stop wasting time watching all the sports games on T.V. and use that time to send letters and emails to our representitives with constructive statements about how we feel about whats going on in our government.Join discussion groups ,have debates, get a concencious,be the government .instruct our employees in washington and state government what expect, nothing less and nothing more.

I see you need to read more carefully into things before jumping to conclusions soemonewhoknows. This hub was a critique of exactly the ignorance you are accusing me of, because most people don't know, or even care to know, where their money is going. Obviously people can do all the things you listed like writing congressmen and whatnot, but the point is they usually don't. Please think about context before showing off that you "know" more than the next guy.

Very witty stuff you wrote! It's enjoyable to read :)

Also someonewhoknows mention that income taxes are used to pay interests on loans to cover govt programs make a lot of sense. From what I read, the Federal Reserve establishment also brought with it the establishment of the IRS, which helps making sure there's no holes in the cash flow/circulation as the Fed intended when money is being print/or put into circulation to keep the economy "stimulated" (because if they print out certain number of $ yet people take it and bury it, hypothetically speaking, instead of use it, the economy doesn't benefit and the Keynesian theory fail. However at the same time, that system also gets abused by fat-cat investors giving us the bubbly economy we have). We pay taxes year round even when we're dead (inheritance tax) just to keep the cycle going. Warfare, according to a book I read on fairtax (although some don't think there's anything fair about it) states that there were much propaganda and "support-our-troops" catering to people's hearts during WWII into agreeing to witholdings to futher fund the war among other things like more access to peoples money and bigger govt! I've yet to be well informed enough but am in the spirit to be more so.

Lastly, I followed your link mainly because you said in reply to a question awhile ago: Well if God was "working through" you, then it would be him, not you, doing all the shit that he could do. A better question would be "Why the hell does God need to work through me when he is supposedly all powerful?"

I'm not sure if you're sarcastic or not but just incase you're wondering still..based on my understanding, supposedly God who though powerful, he doesn't want to be the one having to deal and clean up after the rebellious one (namely Lucifer)- instead of dealing with the fallen angel directly, God wanted to let us humans who are weak and LIMITED to time and space, yet are strong earthen vessels created to contain God's overcoming life (spirit), to be the ones to defeat the devil as well as for His divine economy. So though we are weak, we can do all things in Christ (as the life giving Spirit) who strengthens us (Phillipians 4:13). In doing this, we bring glory to God.

Also, from a source here http://www.lsmradio.com/audio/genesis.html

The Creation of time and space (and everything in it) is mentioned in Genesis 1:1 afterwhich there's only transformation and making. And before creation there was an eternity past, and eternity future (to come). Time and space we know of is for us to carry out His divine economy and plan through PRAYER. As Jesus suggested on how we should pray: Our Father who art in heaven... thy Kingdom come Thy WILL BE DONE.
